About Beagles

Beagles have been around since Roman times and are one of the most popular breeds in the United States.   Beagles are loving, curious, and great friends.  They have great health and require little grooming.

Our Answers to Frequently Asked Beagle Questions

Are Beagles good with kids?
Yes!  Try googling the best family dog breed and you will find the Beagle in pretty much every list.  One reason being is that Beagles are just the right size for kids- they are not so big that they can overpower kids, yet they are not so small as to break if your kids fall on top of them.  They are also very patient with children and gravitate to them naturally.  Beagles have a perfect amount of energy to match a child's energy- they love to relax, but are always eager to do things with the people they love.

Are Beagles good with other animals? Are Beagles okay to be an only animal in the household?
The vast majority of Beagles are great with other animals.  It has to be remembered though that they are a hunting dog, so it is not a good idea to leave them alone with small prey animals. Beagles are social dogs, but that doesn't mean they must have other animals for companionship.  If they are receiving socialization enough from people, they generally do just fine as the only animal in the household.

Is a Male or Female Beagle better?

Both genders are amazing.   We have not noticed a difference in the way genders act.  Rather, personality is dictated by training and the individual dog.    You can't go wrong with either gender.

Do Beagles bark a lot?
Like most dogs, it depends on the Beagle and their training.  Our Beagles do not bark much at all.  When Beagles are taught manners they tend to be very quiet dogs.

Do Beagles need baths frequently?
No.  Their short hair repels a lot of dirt and an occasional brushing goes a long way with a Beagle.

What do Beagles need?
Love.  Beagles thrive  on love from people.  They feed off of affection and are eager to please those who love them.
A fence.  Beagles will go after smells to find out what things are.  To protect them a fence is needed.
A healthy diet.  Beagles are a healthy breed, but they do like to overeat.  Because of this owners need to make sure not to feed their Beagle to much, even when they bat their beautiful brown eyes at you.

What weather are Beagles best suited for?
Beagles are very well suited to pretty much all weather.  Even though they have a short coat, they do fine outside in the winter as long as they stay dry and are provided with adequate shelter. On extremely cold days we recommend bringing them in the garage under a heat lamp if you do not bring them in your house.  Beagles actually love to play in the snow and look like bunnies when they hop through it.  During really hot days owners need to make sure that their Beagles are getting shade and plenty of water.

Do Beagles shed?
Yes.   Beagles shed a moderate amount but less than   Labradors or Corgis.

Do Beagles have health problems?
Beagles really do not suffer from many health problems.  As one of the healthiest breeds, there are few medical concerns when it comes to Beagles.  Some common health problems that Beagles are prone to are cherry eye and ear infections.  In all our years with Beagles we haven't encountered many health problems.

Do Beagles wander?
It depends on the training.  Generally speaking though, Beagles are wanderers and go after anything that their nose picks up.  But this can be stopped with the proper training and a good fence. For example, we take our Beagles out without leashes and they stay near us because of the training that they have received.  However, we keep them kenneled when we are not with them to make sure that they stay safe.

Are Beagles good hunters?
Yes!  Beagles have as many scent receptors as German Shepherds and are popular in airport security because of their nose.  They follow ground and air scents making them great trackers.  Not much can hide from a well trained Beagle.  They can also be used to follow a trail of blood while hunting, making them excellent hunting companions.

Are Beagles easy to train?
First off, Beagles are super intelligent, which can be a double edged sword.  On one hand they learn really fast, but they also test you to see if you are serious.  When training a Beagle you need to find the proper motivation for them and be consistent.  Also, you need to train in a place with few distractions, just like when you are teaching a human something new. Overall, training a Beagle is relatively easy as long as you use the correct motivation for the individual Beagle and stay consistent.

What colors do Beagles come in?
The most common color is tri color (black, tan, and white).  There are so many different colors though!  Some of these colors include lemon and white, brown and white, blue ticked, lilac, and chocolate tri.  For pictures and even more colors check out this link:    National Beagle Club Colors.

What do newborn Tri Color Beagles look like?

Tri color Beagles are born black and white.  As they grow they gain brown around the face and on the legs.  Check out our Facebook page in our albums and you will be able to see how tri color puppies gain more brown as they grow.
